Settlement and Floor Sloping
Cracks in brick veneer, foundation walls, drywall, slabs, or interior finishes can raise concerns about settlement. Sloping floors can also cause homeowners to worry that a house is moving or sinking. However, settlement should not be diagnosed from one symptom alone.
A proper structural evaluation considers the surrounding context, including the foundation type, framing layout, crawlspace conditions, drainage patterns, age of construction, visible distress, and whether movement appears active or longstanding. In some cases, sloping floors may be related to framing deflection, prior renovations, moisture damage, or original construction tolerances rather than ongoing foundation settlement.
Riley Residential Structural Engineering can review visible conditions, provide an opinion regarding the likely structural concern, and recommend repair or monitoring when appropriate. When the observed conditions do not appear to indicate a significant structural issue, the evaluation can also provide valuable peace of mind.
